The Princely House of Liechtenstein and equestrian culture

The Princely House of Liechtenstein has connections with the world of horse breeding and riding stretching back over centuries. This is continued today with LGT’s commitment to equestrian sport.

Eisgrub stud farm

Prince Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein (1611-1684) was the first of the Liechtenstein princes to become seriously involved in horse breeding, and he established the stud farm in Eisgrub, today’s Letnice in the Czech Republic near the Austrian border. His stud farm became well regarded all over Europe as he made valuable presents from his stud to European rulers such as the French king Louis XIV. Prince Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein was also the founder of the Princely Collections.

"Palace of Horses"

The son of Prince Karl Eusebius, Prince Johann Adam Andreas I, had the famous royal stables built at Eisgrub by architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. It was Prince Karl Eusebius who demanded that the stables be seen as a demanding construction task, which was meant to reflect the importance of horse breeding in Baroque architecture. Fischer von Erlach designed such an extraordinary building that art historian Hans Sedlmayer later called it a “Palace of Horses”.
