At the ePrix in the heart of Paris ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport experienced a day to forget. Having most recently clinched three podium positions in a row, the team, for the first time since May 2015, scored no points on a Formula E race day. In just three weeks’ time the squad’s home rounds will be held in Berlin, giving the team the chance to quickly make up for today.

Strong showing by Daniel Abt - by way of exception not on the race track, but in fact on the simulator in Las Vegas: he produced an inspirational recovery drive in the first virtual Formula E race in history on his way from 17th on the grid to claim ninth place. Abt’s team mates Lucas di Grassi und Patrik Holzmann, who had qualified as fan for the race, went away empty handed.

From the outset, the ABT Formula E team and its two drivers Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt have succeeded in remaining at the forefront in the battle for the top spots. During the second season, Lucas di Grassi fought neck and neck for the championship title through to the last race, in the end just narrowly missing his goal by only two points. As the driver with the most podium finishes, he can nevertheless look back on an outstanding season and together with his team enjoy the overall second place finish for both the driver and the team.

ABT Sportsline is the leading global tuner for vehicles produced by Volkswagen Group and one of the most successful motorsport teams in Europe. ABT Sportsline’s headquarters in Kempten in the Allgäu region in Germany, employs around 170 people and is represented in 50 countries. The motorsport team competes as an Audi works team in the DTM, as Bentley Team ABT in the ADAC GT Masters, and as Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport in the Formula E.
Lucas di Grassi explains the Formula E to former ski downhill champion Marco Büchel.
During the first Formula E season in 2014, all teams started with the same cars. Since then, however, the teams have been authorized to fully modify their power trains. All the other components remain the same for all teams. The electric motor, power electronics and the engine – the “core element” so to say, of the ABT racing cars – are an impressive example of outstanding engineering: together with the automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler, ABT Sportsline has built up enormous expertise in the electromobility segment in recent years, which it has used to establish a highly competitive Formula E package.
The cars accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately three seconds. Their maximum speed is 225 km/h. 200 kW are available during the practice sessions and qualifyings, while 170 kW are available during the race. The noise level during races is around 80 decibels, which corresponds approximately to the volume of a truck driving by at a distance of 7.5 meters.

Over the last two years, Formula E has developed into an attractive international racing series, and its fan base is growing continuously. The staging of the races, which take place in the hearts of major cities around the world, has its own very special appeal – no other racing series offers spectators such an up-close look at the world of motorsport. Normally, spectators have to travel to circuits far outside city limits to attend traditional motorsport races. Formula E, on the other hand, brings the sport to the cities and to the people.
Electromobility, particularly in big cities, is becoming an increasingly important issue. “We will be seeing changes in mobility in the future. We expect that after 2020, we will witness a significant rise in the number of fully electric-powered vehicles,” says Prof. Peter Gutzmer, Deputy CEO and Chief Technology Officer at Schaeffler. “Particularly in cities, electromobility will become the norm.”
Accumulating knowledge for mass production
The knowledge that mechanics, developers and engineers accumulate as a result of the Formula E is enormously valuable for the further development of electrotechnology. “The experiences gained from the Formula E are extremely important for us. In the work we do together, and thanks to the ongoing discussions and the direct competition, we learn a lot that we can later apply to mass production,“ says Prof. Gutzmer. The Formula E helps to better understand the technology and set new benchmarks in the development of innovative sustainable technologies.
