Precision, innovation, expertise, quality materials and a healthy dose of patience – these are some of the essentials wherever high-end workmanship is called for, such as in watchmaking. The best watches in the world are crowned every year at the GPHG, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. LGT has been a partner of this high-profile contest since January 2017.
Craftsmanship of the highest order: It is not without good reason that the awards presented at the GPHG are known as the “Oscars of the watchmaking industry.” The timepieces that are honored at the GPHG are among the most sophisticated and beautiful models in the world.
The GPHG was established in 2001 to showcase Swiss watchmaking and its values all around the world. The annual contest is open to any brand and several hundred watches are put forward every year. A manufacturer can submit up to six models for the competition, picking which of the twelve categories – including Ladies, Men, Calendar, Travel Time, Sports and Jewelery – to enter its creations in. An international independent jury made up of 20 illustrious experts chooses the winners.
The GPHG is one of the most prestigious accolades in the watchmaking industry and the awards ceremony and the exhibitions before and after it are among the most important events in the sector. The highly coveted prizes are presented every November in the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
The guest list at the awards ceremony in Geneva in November reads like the "Who’s Who" of international watchmaking. However, the GPHC is more than just a high-class evening event. The 72 nominees for the GPHG are put on display at various exhibitions in major cities around the world in the two months prior to the awards ceremony. Recent years have seen these exhibitions visit places such as Zurich, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Geneva, Beijing, Macao, Dubai and New Delhi. They give a select audience of interested visitors the chance to marvel at the year’s best and most exquisite timepieces all under one roof.
Following the awards ceremony, the twelve victorious watches, along with the winners of the "Aiguille d’Or," the Revival Prize and the Public Prize, also go on show in another exhibition, which in recent years has been held in Dubai.
The most beautiful specimens from 40 different watch brands will be on display in Geneva again this year. For the first time, the jury will distinguish two recently created categories in order to pay tribute not only to timeless elegance, but also to today's trends: The "Challenge Watch Price" honors perfection at modest prices, while the "Audacity Price" rewards creative freedom.
LGT has been supporting the GPHG since January 2017 as its main sponsor. Watchmaking is all about quality and innovation – values that also epitomize LGT. By sponsoring the GPHG, we hope to promote the long tradition of watchmaking in Switzerland and the inestimable value of high-precision Swiss craftsmanship on the international stage.
