Mr. Gilman, the first CD “Italian Journey”, is now being followed up with “Russian Soul”. Why?
"Russian Soul" follows the same principle as the first CD. For the first album, we selected Italian music. On the new CD, the pieces are by Russian composers. The pieces on the first album were very masterful, and thanks to Italian opera, also full of spirit. On this album, our young musicians are exploring new terrain. “Russian Soul” is calm, profound and melancholic – and very touching. Put the CD on, open a good bottle of wine and enjoy the music.
From masterful Italianità to the melancholy and sadness of the Russian soul: was this a challenge for the young soloists?
To play the music of Russian composers such as Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski, Sergei Rachmaninow or Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow is a challenge even for experienced artists. On the new CD, our young talents show that although they may not yet have extensive life experience, they do have enough maturity, depth and understanding to interpret these pieces with a lot of emotion.
The members of the ensemble are striving to become professional musicians. How important is the new CD for their development?
At LGT Young Soloists, we foster each musician individually. That’s why for the CD, we selected pieces that take them a step further in their musical development.
In addition to that, with the LGT Young Soloists they gain valuable experience both when they perform in concert as well as in the studio.
"Italian Journey" was released in September 2015. How has the orchestra changed since then?
We have broadened our repertoire and we are more outwardly confident. Thanks to our many concerts around the world, we have also become internationally renowned. When we last announced we would be holding auditions, we even received applications from overseas, from the US and Columbia. I think that today we can proudly say that our orchestra is made up of the world’s best musicians of this younger generation.
What do the LGT Young Soloists have planned for the coming months?
At the beginning of July, we will be playing a concert at the Tonhalle Zürich, after that we will be traveling to do a number of performances by the Mattsee near Salzburg. Then we will be at the Rheingau music festival. In the fall, we will once again be performing concerts on the luxury cruise ship MS Europa and the traditional LGT Tour, and we will be performing in Asia. We have a very exciting second half of 2017 ahead of us!
For the second CD "Russian Soul" the LGT Young Soloists chose Russian works primarily of the 19th century. Among others, the LGT Young Soloists present the "Paganini" Rhapsody by Sergei Rachmaninoff as well as his famous "Vocalise", a fantasy on motifs from the opera "The Golden Cockerel" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the well-known "Andante cantabile" by Pjotr Iljitsch Tchaikovsky. The young string players’ fine-tuned sense for the melancholy music attributed to the Russian soul gives the album its own, profound note.
